Hemorrhoids from pregnancy could be caused by the following:

pressure from the enlarging uterus caused by the growing of fetus and uterus.

the increase of blood flow to the pelvic area which caused the veins in rectal wall to bulge, swell and itch;

constipation during pregnancy. This increases the straining and pressure during bowel movement

pressure to the hemorrhoidal veins during childbirth as a result of pushing during labor

enlargement of hemorrhoidal vessel due to hormonal changes

Hemorrhoids and Pregnancy: Prevention

You could decrease the risk of hemorrhoids from pregnancy by doing the following:

get sufficient daily exercise to speed up the intestines. Walking or Kegel exercise are recommended.

avoid from standing or sitting for too long


when urge occurs empty the bowels as soon as possible

increase the intake of fiber and vitamin E

increase the intake of water

Hemorrhoids and Pregnancy: What you should do

Apart from the above mentioned prevention, if you are suffering from hemorrhoids during pregnancy, you should also:

Not sleeping on your back instead sleep on your side. This is to reduce the pressure on the affected area;

Not lingering or straining yourself on the toilet.

Stay clean. Use soft tissue to clean the affected area. However, using pre-moistened wipes may be better than dry toilet papers. Alternatively, use medicated wipes for hemorrhoids patients;

Sit on doughnut-shaped pillow

Take a warm bath when feeling discomfort. Fill the tub with warm water and soak several times a day.

Apply ice pack to soothe the pain of hemorrhoids

If you must sit for a long time, take frequent breaks in between

Try applying witch hazel which is available at most pharmacies

Try suppository or hemorrhoid cream that is safe to use during pregnancy
